A Dance with a Cormorant: When Wild Swimming Becomes Wild Connection

Sometimes the most meaningful connections happen in the most unexpected places. Today, during my 57th sea dip at Bannow Beach, I shared the waves with a remarkable swimming companion – a Cormorant who seemed surprisingly comfortable with my presence.

🌊 Meeting My Feathered Friend

The morning greeted us with dramatic conditions – 37mph gusts painting white caps across the sea’s surface, while the air temperature hovered at 10°C but felt like a biting 0°C. Yet there we were, two beings from different worlds, sharing the same wild waters.

A Pattern Emerges

Looking back through my recent sea swimming footage, I’ve noticed something fascinating – this wasn’t our first encounter. The same Cormorant (or at least I like to think it’s the same one) has appeared in several of my videos. Perhaps we’re becoming familiar neighbours in this watery domain.

🤿 Nature’s Swimming Master

Today felt different though. Instead of taking flight at my approach, my feathered companion stayed close, diving gracefully through the waves while I battled the conditions. It was a humbling experience – while I could only manage 36 seconds in the challenging seas, the Cormorant moved through the water with effortless grace, showing me what true adaptation to these elements looks like.

The Nature of Trust

There’s something profound about earning the trust of a wild creature. The fact that this Cormorant now seems comfortable enough to continue its morning fishing routine while I’m in the water feels like a precious gift – a small acknowledgement that perhaps I’m becoming part of this beach’s morning rhythm rather than just a visitor.
