Join us as we transform a beautiful modern home into an energy-independent eco haven, embracing renewable technology and sustainable living in rural Ireland.
Our Eco Journey Takes an Exciting New Turn!
After much consideration, we’ve pivoted (yet again) from renovating a 1930s dormer, back to our original plan of purchasing a turnkey property.
We’ve found a property that already embodies many qualities we were originally seeking, nestled on almost 2 acres of mature land surrounded by trees, views, and the gentle soundtrack of birdsong.
Our mission remains the same – to inspire others by sharing our experiences in sustainable living, renewable energy implementation, and the challenges and triumphs along the way.
But now, rather than focusing on extensive renovations, we can immediately begin transforming this modern home into a beacon of energy independence.
The heart of our journey lies in our commitment to sustainability. From the initial move to Bannow to the ongoing transformation of our property, we aim to document every aspect of our eco-friendly lifestyle.
Our website serves as a platform to educate and motivate others to embrace greener living, with a focus on reducing our carbon footprint and fostering a connection with nature.
The home features 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and comes with solid eco-credentials including a B1 BER rating.
While it currently has solar panels for water heating, we’re thrilled about the potential to take its sustainability features to the next level! 🌞
Our Green Technology Upgrades
Our first major project will be transforming the current oil-fired central heating system to a modern heat pump.
This significant upgrade will dramatically reduce our carbon footprint while providing efficient heating throughout the property.
We’re also planning to install a large battery wall system that will work in harmony with expanded solar capabilities.
This powerhouse combination will maximise our energy independence and storage capacity, allowing us to capture solar energy during bright days and use it when needed—even after the sun sets. ⚡
Join us as we transform this modern home into a self-sufficient eco haven!
We’ll be documenting every step of our journey—from selecting the right heat pump technology to installing our battery wall and expanding the solar system.

Beyond Energy: Our Holistic Vision
While upgrading the energy systems forms the backbone of our eco-transformation, our vision extends to every aspect of sustainable living:
- Creating a productive permaculture garden and food forest
- Exploring electric vehicle charging integration
- Supporting local eco-friendly businesses and craftspeople
- Building community connections through sustainability workshops
Why We Chose This Property
The quality craftsmanship throughout our new home is truly exceptional—from the tiled flooring and solid wood doors to the bespoke Paul Sweeney kitchen and Villeroy & Boch sanitary ware.
Rather than spending years on basic renovations, we can immediately focus on transforming this already beautiful home into a beacon of sustainable living in rural Ireland. 🍀
We can’t wait to share this journey with you—the challenges, the triumphs, and everything we learn along the way about creating a more sustainable future.

What are the first steps to start living sustainably?

Begin with small changes like using reusable bags, bottles, and containers.
Gradually incorporate more sustainable practices such as composting and buying in bulk to minimise packaging waste.

Solar panels, heat pumps, and geothermal heating are popular renewable energy sources for homes.
Each option has its benefits, and the choice depends on your location and budget.

Insulate your home, use energy-efficient appliances, like infrared panel heaters and switch to LED lighting.
Consider installing smart thermostats to optimise heating and cooling.

Shop at local farmers’ markets, choose products with eco-friendly certifications, and support businesses that prioritise sustainability in their operations.

Opt for public transportation, stay in eco-friendly accommodations, and support local communities by purchasing locally-made products and services.

Gradually eliminate single-use items, invest in reusable alternatives, and focus on reducing, reusing, and recycling as much as possible.
