From Amazon Prime to Irish Time: Embracing Local Shopping

Being a self-confessed tech enthusiast (it’s part of my job) and rather impatient (possibly due to my ADHD), I used to relish Amazon’s lightning-fast deliveries in Ashtead. Two-hour delivery windows, seven days a week, even Sunday evening deliveries at 8 pm – it was a tech lover’s dream.

Here in Ireland, the Amazon experience is quite different. Many tech items, especially those containing lithium batteries, can’t be delivered. When items are available, delivery times stretch to 2-3 days with no weekend service. Quite the adjustment!

This situation led me to rediscover brick-and-mortar shops. As an introvert who prefers Zoom calls to face-to-face interactions, the prospect of in-person shopping initially felt daunting.

However, the genuine friendliness of Irish people has transformed shopping into an enjoyable experience. Breda in a black sweater is standing behind a counter, with a pair of glasses hanging around her neck. She is in a store with an orange sign in the background.

Joyce’s in Wexford has become my new tech paradise, with knowledgeable staff making each visit a pleasure.

After thorough research for a Heat Pump Tumble Dryer, Joyce’s not only had stock but also a display model. Perfect for a hands-on inspection!

While there, we discovered WiFi-enabled Smart Assistant Infrared Panel Heaters. Helen also spotted Dyson vacuums in the Black Friday sale. The helpful staff suggested considering Miele’s alternative – a premium brand at a surprisingly competitive price.

For our YouTube channel @OurEcoJourney, I film unboxing videos. This proved invaluable when one Infrared Heating Panel arrived damaged.

Joyce’s handled the return seamlessly – no questions asked.

The experience with our Miele vacuum purchase was equally impressive. Upon registering on Miele.ie, I noticed a price difference. Joyce’s promptly refunded the difference after a quick verification.

The Takeaway: Consider exploring your local shops. The human connection might surprise you, offering benefits that even the convenience of online shopping can’t match.
